What Is Wing Chun?

photo01Wing Chun Kung Fu is a unique and effective martial art from Southern China that specializes in close range combat. It is the only martial art created and made famous by a woman.

About 300 years ago, Ng Mui, the Shaolin nun who developed the system, realized that most of the techniques in Shaolin Kung Fu were ineffective for a small woman to use against a larger, stronger man.

She also realized that a woman could not match a man’s stamina in a long fight. With this in mind, Ng Mui developed a system of self defense that enabled a smaller, weaker person such as herself to defeat a bigger, stronger person.

Efficiency in Wing Chun is based on the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Likewise its primary targets all lie along the centerline of one’s opponent.

Wing Chun training is designed according to individual situation, and therefore is suitable for both male & female of all ages. Movie Stars such as Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen and Stephen Chow were Wing Chun practitioners.

Sigung WAN Kam Leung

Since the Wing Chun forms were developed hundreds of years ago, many techniques have been misinterpreted and become obsolete.

Sigung (Grandmaster) WAN Kam Leung, a martial art enthusiast, has tested and modified the mainstream Wing Chun system into a modern day practical combating art. With his teacher, the late Grandmaster WONG Shun Leung’s consent, Sigung Wan named his improved Kung Fu system “Practical Wing Chun” in 1994.

With his outstanding martial art skills, Sigung WAN Kam Leung was invited by the Hong Kong Police Force as the Wing Chun Chief Instructor for the G4 (VIP Protection Unit) in the 1990s. He was the only Kung Fu master ever employed by the former British Hong Kong government.
